Birmingham Jewellery Biennial

Brand Identity

& Place Activation.

A New Identity for the UK’s Festival of Jewellery

We were commissioned by the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust to create the brand identity for the first-ever Birmingham Jewellery Biennial-a landmark celebration of craftsmanship, innovation, and cultural heritage in the heart of Birmingham.

This project coincided with Birmingham being named a World Craft City, placing the spotlight firmly on the Jewellery Quarter’s global significance.

The Brief

The Jewellery Quarter Development Trust needed a distinctive brand identity that would:

  • Celebrate 250+ years of jewellery making and skilled craftsmanship

  • Position Birmingham as the UK’s leading destination for jewellery and allied trades

  • Build awareness locally, nationally, and internationally

  • Inspire makers, businesses, and visitors to engage with the Biennial programme

Our Approach

We began by immersing ourselves in the history and stories of the Jewellery Quarter. From traditional workshops to contemporary studios, we explored the themes of heritage, precision, and innovation that define the area.

Using these insights, we developed a visual identity system rooted in clarity, elegance, and adaptability. The design captures the spirit of the Biennial: a bridge between tradition and modernity.

Key elements included:

  • A versatile logo inspired by classic hallmark shapes and contemporary typographic forms

  • A refined colour palette referencing precious metals and industrial heritage

  • Graphic motifs that echo tools and techniques used by generations of makers

  • A tone of voice that feels confident, inclusive, and celebratory

The Outcome

The Birmingham Jewellery Biennial brand identity launched alongside the announcement of Birmingham’s World Craft City status. The project has already generated significant media coverage, helping position Birmingham as a centre of excellence in craft and design.

The new identity provides a strong foundation for promoting events, exhibitions, workshops, and partnerships across the Jewellery Quarter and beyond.

Key Deliverables

  • Brand identity and visual system

  • Logo design and flexible brand assets

  • Tone of voice guidelines

  • Digital and print applications

  • Campaign assets to support communications and PR

Results

The Biennial has received national attention, strengthening Birmingham’s reputation as a hub for creativity and skilled making. The clear, cohesive brand is helping to unite stakeholders, attract audiences, and celebrate the city’s unique story.
